Slough's incoming mayor Cllr Avtar Kaur Cheema will be accompanied by her daughter Harpreet when she attends events over the next year.

She took over the role at Slough Council’s annual meeting on Thursday last week, attended by members of her family as well as the town’s MP Tan Dhesi.

She is the town’s first female Sikh mayor which made the event a particularly special occasion for many of the guests.

The new mayor chose as her charity for the year Basic Thames Valley, where doctors and medical professionals volunteer their space time to act as first responders to incidents.

She told councillors and guests she was looking forward to meeting all the hard working volunteers and charities over the coming year

The new deputy mayor is Cllr Preston Brooker whose wife Shirley will be his deputy mayoress.
