Hundreds of people descended on Burnham Park over the Bank Holiday weekend as the annual donkey derby galloped back into the village.

In its 28th year, the event, organised by Burnham Beeches Rotary, saw seven donkey races in the afternoon interspersed with entertainment from Pop Goes the Choir and the Azure Theatre School, which organisers say were enjoyed by the record crowds of families attending.

Rotary spokesman Claire Popple said there were more stalls than in previous years around the whole park, plus nine local charities taking stands to raise money and awareness for their own causes, as well as many local businesses who "enthusiastically" gave their support.

Money raised from the donkey derby will be distributed to good causes, including the Alexander Devine Children's Hospice in Maidenhead, Thames Valley Adventure Playground, Riding for the Disabled, Thames Hospice, Homestart and Padstones.

More than £300,000 has been raised over the years from the event for charity.

The event was supported on the day by Maidenhead Bridge Rotary and the Farnham Volunteers.

Mike Holehouse, chairman of the donkey derby committee, said: “This year’s successful event couldn’t have been achieved without teamwork and enthusiasm.

“The most important thing is we gave a lot of pleasure to many people whilst raising money for excellent causes.”
