Major improvement works to the A40 between Loudwater and High Wycombe have been welcomed by a councillor who lives along the road and “experiences the problem daily”.

Last week the Bucks Free Press revealed more details about a £6.67 million project to cut congestion and improve air quality along London Road.

The huge revamp project along the three-mile stretch of road will include the removal of the town centre-bound bus lane at the Micklefield Road junction, new pedestrian crossings and changes to traffic lights at major junctions.

More details about major works to London Road revealed

Cllr Julia Wassell, who lives along the London Road - large sections of which are also in her Micklefield ward – said Bucks County Council “should be congratulated” for their work to improve the situation for commuters and residents.

She told the Bucks Free Press: “There is an urgent need to ease congestion and mitigate against pollution. As I live on London Road, I experience the problems daily.

“Officers have walked me up and down the London Road several times and have taken any concerns I had, on board such as retaining on/off parking by the Rifle Butts.

“There are some limitations in places about what they can and can’t do, due to the road width. The constant fiddling with the bus lane I am less keen on.

“Other improvements I have been campaigning for are also going ahead - these are not part of this funding and include flood alleviation improvements on feeder roads are under development.

“I urge all consultees to respond to this and attend the exhibition.”

The plans have been largely welcomed by Bucks Free Press readers, who agreed that the “nightmare” Micklefield Road junction needs work.

Paul Szefer said the junction needs to be “sorted before anything else” and claims the problems there have been “getting worse”.

Jenny Edwards Williams added: “Let’s hope they change the lanes when you come out of the retail park, I think the right hand lane should be for turning right and for going straight on to Micklefield Road.”

Some road users fear the extensive project will cause “chaos” on the roads following major roadworks along Easton Street, Queen Victoria Road and Cressex Road.

A consultation giving residents and road users a chance to have their say on the plans is still running – go to www.buckscc.gov.uk/haveyoursay before Friday, July 12, to comment.

A drop-in exhibition in Wycombe District Council offices tomorrow, Thursday, June 20, from 2pm to 8pm, will also be held.
