THIS week, our regular trip down memory lane takes us to The Waggon and Horses pub in Twyford, which looks largely similar today.
At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking the photograph was taken in 1778 but we know this is not the case because the first ever photograph was taken in 1826.
We believe the 1778 caption is, in fact, a catalogue number devised by the photographer for his filing system.
If you think you know when the photograph was actually taken, please get in touch.
The grade 2 listed building is located to the west of Twyford village and still stands as a public house with flagstone flooring, a low wooden beam ceiling and a small stained-glass window behind the bar.
Every week the team at The Reading Chronicle pores through the archives to find these hidden gems.
We would like to hear your memories of the local area and any thoughts you may have on the changes that have occurred. Get in touch with us by emailing andrew.colley@london.newsquest.co.uk or write to Reading Chronicle, Bowman House, 2-10 Bridge Street, Reading, RG12LU.
We're on the lookout for more historic images from the area.
Send your pictures and suggestions for our team to re-photograph.
