Hundreds of visitors and 700 entries ensured that the 126th Stoke Poges, Wexham and Fulmer Horticultural Society show on Saturday set a new high for the popular event.

The mammoth sized marquee at Stoke Poges School in Rogers Lane was bursting at the seams.

Successful entrants went home proudly holding their cups - many of which in the home economics, arts and crafts sections had been donated by Stoke Poges and Wexham Women's Institute who celebrated their centenary this year.

The Buckinghamshire Gardens Trust had a special display and books to sell - while Claire de Carle who has authored/edited some of the books was there to give further information and answer questions. Nearby was Franzi Cheeseman, head gardener of Stoke Poges Memorial Gardens ready to provide horticultural advice.

Dr Sarah Rutherford, chairman of Buckinghamshire Gardens Trust and author of a number of books about historic gardens presented the cups and trophies - as well as talking about the gardens in South Bucks that she has researched and written about including Stoke Park, Stoke Place and Wexham Springs.

Ruth Rooley, chairman of the society, said: “It was a happy coincidence that someone so knowledgeable about gardens should be the society’s special guest in the year that it received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 'passing horticultural/gardening knowledge and tradition from generation to generation since 1884'.

Everyone enjoyed viewing the wonderful display of classic cars from Uxbridge Classic Vehicle Club and sitting listening to Reading Spring Gardens Brass Band - until a heavy shower arrived. Like the classic cars the band has been coming for the Show over 20 years and are very much a part of it.
