CAMPAIGNERS are in a race against time to raise money for a memorial to fallen soldiers.

Jim Clarke, chair of the Friends of Moses Gate Group, has been attempting to install a monument to those who fought in both the first and second world wars.

He had initially hoped to have the stone memorial in place at the bottom of Egerton Street, Farnworth, for Armistice Day last year to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War.

However, an issue with planning permission meant the project was pushed back and now Mr Clarke is hoping to have finished his plan by November 11.

To that end, Craig Weatherby, another member of the Friends Group, set up a fundraising page through popular website GoFundMe to raise to £525 needed to create the memorial.

"It's been going on for nearly a year," Mr Clarke explained.

"I wanted it in the ground 12 months ago for the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

"It was an idea of mine because at Moses Gate there's no memorial for our war dead."

The closest memorial for most people living in Moses Gate is located in Farnworth Park but the campaigners hope another monument will be more accessible for some.

"I thought it would give local people somewhere to go and pay tribute to the dead without going to the memorial at Farnworth," Mr Clarke added.

The memorial is set to be a square stone around two metres high with plaques on its faces detailing the roles of honour from both wars.

Around 180 men and one nurse from the area died during the First World War and many others in the conflict which followed.

Any extra money raised above the cost of the monument will be used to adorn the area with other decoration.
