The council’s accounts saga is nearing an end.

Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) 2018/19 accounts will be sent to auditors by the end of September, according to a report ahead of today's Audit and Governance committee.

The accounts will then be made available for public inspection shortly afterwards.

A final date for completion of the latest accounts will depend on how the formal audit of the 2017/18 and 2018/19 accounts goes.

The auditor is expected to begin the formal audit for both years on September 30.

RBC’s long-awaited 2016/17 accounts were signed off by auditors EY in July after a two-year wait which has allowed the council to move onto the following years.

The accounts should have been verified by auditors EY in September 2017.

RBC has spent more than £435,000 getting the 2016/17 accounts signed off.

This is an additional spend of at least £327,000 compared to the originally anticipated fee of £108,938.

A final cost of the delay has not yet been announced.
