ROYAL Berkshire Hospital (RBH) has received a new bladder scanner thanks to a charitable donation.

The Woodley and Earley Lions Club donated £8,000 to the hospital which paid for a new bladder scanner.

Members of the Lions visited the Whitley ward at RBH on Monday (October 14) where there was a cheque giving ceremony with the hospital's chief executive, Steve McManus.

The scanner works in a similar way to maternity ultrasound scanners and will be used to help determine and assess bladder volume and function in patients.

Lead nurse, Darren McGregor said: “We would like to thank them for their very generous donation which has enabled us to purchase the bladder scanner and help assess patients quickly and safely to ensure our patients bladders are working and help avoid infection such as sepsis.”

Whitley ward caters for acute medical and cardiology patients who can be vulnerable to kidney infections and may not be passing urine or enough urine.

Using the scanner can help prevent unnecessary catheterisation and reduce risk of infection.

Steve McManus, Chief Executive of The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust said: “We were delighted to welcome the Woodley and Earley Lions club to the hospital to show our appreciation and thank them for their generous donation to fund this bladder scanner for Whitley ward.

"Their amazing contribution and efforts to fundraise are hugely valued and the new bladder scanner will make a great difference for our patients and staff alike.”

Colin Gibson, publicity officer for the Woodley and Earley Lions club, added: “It’s great to see the money donated by the public through our fund raising efforts put to such a worthy cause and benefit so many patients.”
