Plans to extend the beer garden of a riverside pub in central Reading could soon be approved.

Wetherspoons wants to expand The Back of Beyond’s beer garden by turning a car park and bin area into seating for customers.

Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) Planning Applications committee will vote on the proposal at Wednesday’s 630pm meeting at the Civic Offices.

Council officers have backed the plans at the Kings Road pub which they say are “acceptable”.

The only opposition to the application has come from one neighbour, who raised concern about noise from the increased use of the beer garden.

The Back of Beyond, on 108 Kings Road, currently has a beer garden overlooking the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Owners JD Wetherspoon want to turn its service and delivery area into an adaptable extension to its beer garden.

Latest designs suggest the proposal could add an extra six tables to the garden area.

The extended garden area would only be open from 12pm.

During delivery and waste collections, garden furniture would be moved and the area cordoned off using a cantilever gate.

The service and delivery area currently contains a parking area, space for deliveries and bin, bottle, and barrel storage space.

An application to extend the garden was refused by RBC in 2014 because the council believed the proposed loss of the pub’s off-street service and delivery area and its impact on highway safety.

The pub chain believe the dual use nature of its service and delivery area will overcome these issues.

The Back of Beyond has been a JD Wetherspoons pub since 1996.
