AN ‘outstanding’ rated care home has been awarded a five year contract by Royal Borough cabinet members.

Sandown Park Care Home in Windsor, which specialises in nursing and dementia care for 95 residents, will have their contract renewed after their 10 year agreement with the council will come to an end this year.

The contract will commence on April 1 where 20 block beds have been secured for eligible residents over 65, 10 beds for nursing and 10 beds for dementia.

The care home was awarded the ‘outstanding’ rating by the care quality commission in 2016 where it was the first nursing home in the Borough to be awarded the high rating.

However, as of January 2020, all current block beds are occupied.

The budget for the contract is under one million pounds where it will cover the weekly rate of £900 per placement.

Councillor Stuart Carroll (Conservative: Boyn Hill), lead member for social services, said: “We did make changes to our policy about six months ago that we only commission care from providers that were rated by the care quality commission to be good or outstanding.

“I think that’s very important from a resident point of view that we can give them that assurance that we are providing the best possible care and I’m very pleased to say that this particular provider is outstanding.”

Councillor Helen Price (The Borough First: Clewer and Dedworth East) said the facility was good value for money and did great work, but raised concerns about why only 20 beds were secured considering the ‘outstanding’ rating.

Cabinet explained it’s because they are a private organisation and only 20 beds were available for negotiation.
