Frank Spencer has become one of the legendary figures of British comedy, ever since TV viewers saw Michael Crawford reduce the world around him to rubble in the 1970s show Some Mothers Do Have 'em.

Now he is back - in the person of Joe Pasquale in a stage show that has been packing theatres across the country.

He comes to Windsor's Theatre Royal later this month, complete with hilarious mishaps and disasters that really do bring the house down.

In this production Betty has some exciting news for Frank but he is preoccupied by plans to start a career as a magician. With guests arriving for dinner and crossed wires all around the stage is soon set for some priceless misunderstandings.

Co-starring with Joe are Sarah Earnshaw as his long suffering wife Betty and Susie Blake as his constantly infuriated mother-in-law.

The TV show was famous for the dangerous stunts. The stage show definitely matches them according to Joe.

He said: "I’m doing it all – hanging by my ankles, chicken chasing and all sorts. If it’s not dangerous or life threatening I’m not interested anymore. Feel the fear and do it anyway. You’re a long time dead; you might as well live while you can."

But he insists it is a piece of cake compared with his one man show.

He said: "Touring in Some Mothers will be a lot easier than my stand-up show, when a tour is usually forty one-nighters. A week in one place will be like a holiday."

He says his performance will be different from Michael Crawford's.

"I will be projecting my own personality on to the role. When we did the final workshop we had an invited audience. All the younger people didn’t know the show or have a frame of reference with Michael, but they laughed their socks off. Even the older people who remember the original forgot Michael doing it in within five minutes – the script is so good."

The loveable Frank always tries to have impeccable good manners. But Joe admits he does not quite live up to the character he is playing in that respect, admitting: "I am terrible for farting onstage."

The show runs at the Theatre Royal from Tuesday, March 24 to Saturday, March 28. Box office 01753 853888 or theatreroyalwindsor.co.uk
