‘INCOMPREHENSIBLE’ – that is what a shocked resident has said after a Foxborough councillor’s sudden resignation.

Councillor Madhuri Bedi (Labour: Foxborough), who became a member in 2016, has recently announced she won’t be standing at the upcoming by-election in May.

She said: “Walking away was a really difficult decision and heartbreaking.

“Many of my residents have been amazing and I have made many friends that I consider family.

“I want the best for my residents and I’m walking away in the hope they have a councillor who cares for them.

“The problem is that politics has a very dark side.

“In Slough, we have wards that are deprived and that’s not good enough as everyone should have equal opportunities which is something I am against.”

Councillor Bedi insisted that she doesn’t have a “personal vendetta” against any particular councillor or body but disagrees how the authority is operated.

Ignatius Muotoh, Foxborough resident of 15 years, said councillor Bedi’s resignation was “incomprehensible.”

He said: “It is a deep shame that we residents will lose a councillor we believe and trust in, a councillor who has shown nothing but genuine dedication, commitment and empathy in her dealings with residents.

“I applaud Councillor Bedi for being true to her beliefs and putting the residents above her career as a councillor.”

In a recently published member’s attendance report from May 2019 to February 2020, councillor Bedi had the lowest attendance rate where she was expected to be at 15 council meetings but only attended six (40 per cent), a downgrade from a previous 94 per cent rate from the year before.

She said: “My problem is that I feel ashamed walking into that office when the council has spent so much money on it.

“How can I justify this to my residents?

However, she was in the top three of the most amount of casework councillors do to help residents within their wards.

Going forward, councillor Bedi said she will continue to be active within the community of Foxborough and her charity, Vishaal Foundation.

A candidate list across the borough will be released on April 9 where a new councillor will be democratically voted in on May 7.
