THE hard work of volunteer sewers who produced vital non-surgical scrubs for frontline workers has paid off as the NHS continues to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, councillor Sayonara Luxton, appealed for experienced sewers to make those scrubs as well as financial donations to pay for the material to make them.

Volunteers ranged from professional sewers, those from different backgrounds and those who retired a few years ago – like resident Dotty, 85, who has donated her time and expertise to make the important scrubs as well as being a carer for her blind 90-year-old husband.

The council has announced the appeal has been voted a success by all those involved, as many frontline NHS staff at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust now have more non-surgical scrubs which will help to keep the medical team safe.

The Mayor paid a visit to Thames Hospice, which is currently looking after patients with Covid-19, delivering 30 pairs of scrubs to the staff.

Councillor Luxton said: “I would like to thank all those generous residents who have donated financially and contributed material and masks to the appeal without whose input this initiative would not have been possible. I also gratefully thank all the people who have been part of this fantastic ‘sewing bee’ under the direction of Lynda Yong Couture.

“The support and interest has been absolutely amazing and I am thrilled that the residents of the Royal Borough have so willingly shown their support and thanks to the wonderful NHS, who are looking after us all at this time of national emergency.

“I am very proud to be the Mayor at this difficult time and glad that, together with our residents, I had the opportunity to help the hospitals and carers, etc. The volunteers from all over have been the big success of our scrub appeal and we have been complimented on this by others from all over the country.”
