The Aldi supermarket chain has put in a planning application for a new store on the site of the old Wyevale garden centre in Dedworth Road.

This follows a public consultation which has shown an overwhelming support for the plan from residents.

There had been a lingering hope in the community that the garden centre on the site might be able to remain. But out of 1,330 comments received during the consultation, 83 per cent were in favour of the discount food store being allowed to set up on the brownfield site.

Over 7,000 households were consulted on the plan.

The proposed store would cover a space of 1,864 square metres. The company says it would be less high and have a smaller footprint than existing buildings on the site.

It would be the first Aldi in Windsor, creating 40 full and part time jobs. It would have 117 customer parking spaces and two electric charging points.

The company is pledging to be sensitive to the site's surroundings and 'maintain and enhance' the existing landscape where possible.

Aldi’s Regional Property Director, Lee McCandless said: "We would like to thank local residents and businesses for engaging in the consultation process and providing feedback on our proposals. We are very pleased with the level of support we have received so far and look forward to working with residents and Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council throughout the application process.”

The application is now with the Royal is expected to determine the application in the coming months.
