READING has been used as the backdrop for many films and TV shows over the years, and has recently been ranked as fifth for the best filming locations in the UK.

Sovereign analysed the Metascore - the average score of professional critic reviews - of every movie shot in more than 900 locations to identify the filming location with the best reviewed movies on average.

All of the movies shot in Reading equate to an average movie Metascore of of 64.6 - placing the town fifth in the list of UK locations.

The top three rated movies filmed in Reading include: The King's Speech, Match Point and Bugsy Malone.

1. The King's Speech (2010), with a Metascore of 88

Englefield House was used for hit Colin Firth movie The King's Speech.

Originally a Tudor mansion, Englefield House, Englefield Village, just west of Reading, is a private home and not open to visitors, but you can visit the gardens.

It's also appeared in several other films, including Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, Woody Allen’s Match Point.

2. Match Point (2005), with a Metascore of 72

Reading Chronicle:

Match Point is a 2005 psychological thriller film written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, Brian Cox, and Penelope Wilton.

Parts of the popular film were also filmed at Englefield House.

3. Bugsy Malone (1976), with a Metascore of 71

Reading Chronicle:

Lots of the popular 70s film Bugsy Malone was filmed in the town.

The bar scenes were filmed in biscuit factory Huntley and Palmers.

4. The Krays (1990), with a Metascore of 70

This fact-based movie follows the life of the twin crime-lords in London's '60s underworld, and parts were filmed in various locations across the town.

5. X Men: First Class (2011), with a Metascore of 65

Again, much of this movie was filmed in Englefield House.

6. Rats (2016), with a Metascore of 62

This documentary horror used Reading as the backdrop for some of the story.

7. The Eagle Has Landed (1976), with a Metascore of 61

This popular 70s film tells the story of a German plot to kidnap Sir Winston Churchill at the height of World War II.

The East Anglia village of ‘Studley Constable, Norfolk’ is actually filmed in Mapledurham, on the A329 just northwest of Reading.

8. Great Expectations (2012), with a Metascore of 60

Once again, Englefield House is used in this film, this time as Miss Havisham's 'Satis House'.

9. Easy Virtue (2008), with a Metascore of 58

You guessed it - Englefield House was also used in Easy Virtue - a romantic comedy about a young Englishman who marries a glamorous American.
