Disability scooter riders who visit the beautiful Grand Union Canal's Slough arm are being warned to take care - after a man accidentally drove into the water on Monday evening.

Shocked passers-by ran to the aid of the man after seeing the accident happen at about 7pm.

A spokesman for Langley fire station praised the 'good action' of members of the public who were able to reach the man and help him to safety.

Firefighters arrived moments later and retrieved the scooter, before wrapping the man in blankets to keep him warm.

He was taken for hospital for a check-up.

The firefighters' spokesman said: "The ground is very unstable on the towpath by the canal between Slough and Langley and it is advisable not to go too fast on a vehicle."
