Christians in church and at home were able to worship together on Sunday for the first time since lockdown started.

Socially distanced churchgoers at All Saints Church in Frances Road sat in the pews, just yards away from a huge screen filled with the faces of the 30 or so worshippers at home taking part in the service simultaneously through Zoom.

It was the first time since churches reoepened last month that a service had been streamed live to homes while it was actually happening in church.

Reverend Canon Sally Lodge, Team Rector in charge of New Windsor's four churches, said: "Thanks to our wonderful team of volunteer tech experts, we were able to gather in church and at home together.

"None of the churches had internet access before lockdown."

Mrs Lodge said: "I have been really encouraged by the way congregants have embraced the technology.

"Often it has been older people helping others of their generation to do it."

Now this is going to become a weekly phenomenon at 10am each Sunday at Central Windsor's four churches.

The Parish Church in High Street will host this Sunday's service, Holy Trinity in Claremont Road on August 23, All Saints again on August 30 and St Stephen's in Vansittart Road on September 6.

Worshippers who actually attend the churches will be socially distanced - All Saints on Sunday has chairs at the back of the pews and down the sides to make it possible.

Inevitably this could limit numbers at some point and Mrs Lodge says a booking system might have to be considered some time in the future.

It was the first time in several months on Sunday that All Saints' newly refurbished organ had been played and the churches' director of music John Halsey took the opportunity to get a picture of the 'new look' service from above.
