TRAVELLERS set up an illegal encampment at a Kendal school.

Police were called after local residents spotted several caravans parked on Queen Katherine School’s car park in Appleby Road.

The travellers were later disbanded and it is understood they left the town the next day.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said two men, who had been part of the group, had been arrested following allegations of criminal damage and assault.

One man, aged 45, was arrested for criminal damage and was issued with a community resolution order.

A community resolution order is a nationally recognised term regarding lesser, or anti-social offences where an offender is identified and forms an agreement of resolution with the offended party rather than take the matter through the courts.

Another man, aged 23, was held on suspicion of assault without injury and released under investigation.

Police said the two men were also arrested on suspicion of theft following allegations that several businesses had been targeted.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Following an illegal encampment on Appleby Road in Kendal last week two men were arrested.

“A 45 year-old was arrested for criminal damage and was issued with a community resolution order.

“The second male, a 23-year-old was arrested for assault without injury and was released under investigation.

“The travellers moved off the camp on Friday.”
