A SERVING Slough councillor has revealed he has moved to Lincolnshire to be with his family following health issues.

On Twitter, users made accusations that councillor Ted Plenty (Labour: Langley St Mary’s) had relocated away from Slough, leading to calls for his resignation.

Speaking to the Observer, Cllr Plenty confirmed he moved to Lincolnshire in March 2020 to be with his twin sons following two minor strokes last year as he was expecting his term to end in May.

Cllr Plenty said he decided not to stand for reselection at this year’s by-election as he believed ‘it was his time’ – but the government announced all elections will be postponed next year due to Covid-19.

He said: “I had two minor strokes – which gave me a slight speech impediment. I can get by – but I know it affects me and I want to be near to my supportive family.”

He added he told all councillors – both Labour and Conservative – and some of his constituents that he was planning to stand down and move to Lincolnshire in March where there was ‘no issues at all’.

Cllr Plenty said: “I discussed all this with councillor Wayne Strutton, the Conservative leader, and he had no issues at all.

“He was sorry I was leaving and then when I was leaving, he was quite content when the extension was announced.”

In response to those who called for him to resign, Cllr Plenty said: “I do a lot of casework and I attend meetings – probably more than the opposition members.

“So, there’s no point in me resigning because there’s no by-elections.

“If I resigned, there will just be a vacancy with no councillor representing people. So, if they [government] want me to stay on for another year – I’ve got no issues with that.”

He added he does all of his casework via phone calls and emails – and still visits Slough occasionally.
