THE LATEST Coronavirus rules state that as of Monday, September 14, social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal and may result in fines. But can you still share a car with people outside your household?

Here we look at everything you need to know about the government's rules on shared cars, taxis and Ubers.

Can I share a car under new rules?

Yes, but under certain conditions. Government guidance suggests you 'try not to share a vehicle with those outside your household or support bubble'.

If you need to share a car with someone outside of your support bubble, you need to share the car with the same people each time.

Additionally, the guidance states that:

  • You open windows for ventilation
  • Drivers and passengers are encouraged to wear a face covering
  • Clean your car between journeys, especially door handles and areas people are most likely to touch
  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after completing your journey

What are the sitting recommendations?

Government advice states that you should travel facing away from the driver or other passengers, or if that's not possible, sit side-by-side or behind other people, rather than facing them.

Also, where possible, sit as far away from car users outside of your household or support bubble as much as you can.

If in doubt, ask the driver what would be the preferred sitting arrangement.
