A grandmother has revealed her secret to looking youthful after celebrating her 102nd birthday.

Bracknell resident Ruby Rodgers enjoyed a socially distanced family garden party on Saturday, September 26, for her birthday.

Her granddaughter Nickie Carrier explained her Nana's simple secret to living to 102.

She said: "Ruby always says her secret is to 'Enjoy life, keep smiling and be kind'."

It was touch and go as to whether Ruby was able to see her family for her special day due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the care home in Crowthorne allowed residents to have outdoor visits after not being able to go out for six months due to lockdown restrictions.

Nickie added: "We had a very small family gathering in my garden last Saturday for Ruby and she was delighted with her freedom as she has always enjoyed being taken out to shops and garden centres.

Ruby's granddaughter is highlighting the plight that residents of care homes and their families are going through at this current time.

She added: "Astbury Manor have looked after their residents well and Ruby could not have been in a better place. My mother, sister and myself have been able to visit her once a week, most weeks, since lockdown restrictions were eased at the end of May but our visits were from behind a screen, allowing no contact or involvement in her care.

"We are very lucky we can now take Ruby out, albeit somewhere quiet, but after 6 months of being in the Care Home, like many others, will have suffered mentally from the lack of family care and support. It has been and still is a very worrying time for those in care homes and their families."

"With the new restrictions we have no idea what will happen in the future and, unlike the families of Captain Tom and other elderly charity fundraisers, many of us have been unable to have any involvement in our relatives lives for the last six months."
