THE government has been asked by the council leader to consider moving the Royal Borough to tier two – or ‘high’ alarm level – after coronavirus cases have increased at an “alarming” rate.

Councillor Andrew Johnson (Conservative: Hurley and Walthams), leader, has openly called for government to impose further restrictions on the Royal Borough.

The borough is currently under tier one – or ‘medium’ alert level – where national restriction, such as the 10pm curfew, applies.

This comes after the latest data showing Windsor and Maidenhead having 119 cases per 100,00, with 180 new cases confirmed for the week of October 6-12, according to the BBC.

In a statement, councillor Andrew Johnson said: “Our Covid-19 cases are increasing at a worrying and alarming rate.

“We were placed in the medium tier but due to the rapid rise we will be asking government to consider moving us to the high tier next week.

“This means there will be further restrictions on our lives which mean we won’t be able to see our friends or loved ones indoors, we won’t be able to visit our parents or partners in care homes (unless is exceptional circumstances) and we will all need to work from home where we can as now.

“We all need to take responsibility and act now before we move into the very high tier which is a real risk if we don’t put a stop to the spread of the virus. This will have a damaging impact on you, our local businesses and our local economy.

“We urge everyone to consider their actions in whatever setting, seeing friends at home, visiting the shops, picking up children on the school run, or eating out. We all need to consider our actions to stop the spread.”

What happens if the Royal Borough is placed in tier-two?

Under the ‘high’ alert level, this includes banning people mixing with anybody outside their household or support bubble in any indoor setting.

The rule of six continues to apply for socialising outdoors, such as parks or a garden.

Every restriction under tier one also applies – which includes:

  • 10pm curfew for pubs, bars, and restaurants and offer table service only
  • Takeaway food can still be ordered after 10pm – but only if ordered online or by phone
  • Face coverings must be worn on public transport and in taxis as well as shops, restaurants, and bars
  • Rule of six – gatherings of more than six, both in and outdoors, is banned apart from weddings and funerals
  • Work from home if you can
  • Schools, universities, and childcare remain open
  • Places of worship remain open – but the rule of six still applies
  • People should reduce the number of journeys they make where possible
