Windsor's MP Adam Afriyie has accused the Government of giving the House of Commons 'old data and well-meaning speculation, not robust science' to justify the current lockdown.

Mr Afriyie voted against the lockdown during Wednesday's Commons debate, during which MPs voted by 516 to 38 to give it their approval.

He said in a statement issued afterwards: “I could not in good conscience vote for a second lockdown, and destroy businesses and millions of people’s jobs and livelihoods across the country and in the Windsor constituency in the process. MPs were given old data and well-meaning speculation, not robust science.”

During the debate in the House Mr Afriyie said he had spoken to business owners who had been been in tears on the phone and in person when they thought about their staff and their livelihoods.

He warned the lockdown would prove fatal to such businesses.

Slough MP Tan Dhesi voted in favour of the lockdown, but stated that the plans were too little too late.

Maidenhead MP and former Prime Minister Theresa May abstained from the vote, while Beaconsfield MP Joy Morrisey voted in favour.
