TIMED road closures next to Wexham Court Primary are set to go ahead as Slough Borough Council proceeds with its first-ever ‘school street’ trial.

Moat Drive – which is next to the school on Church Lane – will have manned barriers placed at both ends for an hour each morning and afternoon during the seven-week trial.

The road and its junctions with Knolton Way and Hillersdon will be closed off to motorists between 8am and 9am and again at 3pm and 4pm.

The school has seen ‘poor parent parking’ and aims to be almost car free at the beginning and end of each day, encouraging drivers to pick up their children by other methods such as walking or cycling.

The trial began on Monday, November 9, and will run until the school breaks up for Christmas – but it could be extended to other schools if successful.

Residents of Moat Drive will still be able to come and go as they please through the manned barriers and will be given permits.

Parents can still drive to pick up their children from school – but they are encouraged to use the designated car park in Church Lane.

Councillor Rob Anderson (Labour: Britwell and Northborough), cabinet member for transport and environmental services, said: “This is a really exciting pilot with the school to address the problem of too many cars in this road at peak hours.

“We have seen similar schemes work in other places and the result will be a safer, healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone around the school.”

School streets have been successfully set up in Europe and London and are beginning to be trialled in different areas of the UK.
