The Youth Offending Service run by Windsor and Maidenhead Council has been rated as 'good' by the Government - but with some reservations.

The inspection was carried out last August and split the services provided into 12 areas.

The newly published report reveals that seven found to be 'good', two outstanding and three 'requiring improvement'.

But the finding for the service overall was 'good'.

In his report the Director of Operations Marc Baker said the probation inspectors had examined three cases where young people had faced a court appearance.

It found the Youth Offending Team had done a good job in reducing the risk of harm to individual young people who had faced a court appearance but needed to focus more on supporting them in getting away from criminal behaviour.

The report found the council's work in assessing and working with two young people who had not faced court was 'outstanding'.

Mr Baker said: "Practitioners used their professional curiosity to gain a thorough understanding of the needs in both cases and took a fully collaborative approach with the police to implement the out-of-court disposals.

"However, aspects of planning and implementation and delivery of services and interventions were not sufficiently robust."

These required improvement.

Councillor Stuart Carroll, the Royal Borough's cabinet member for adult social care, children’s services, health and mental health, said: "Delivery of this service is always a great team effort.

“We are committed to ensuring we look after our children and young people and following our successful good rating for children’s services earlier this year, I am delighted that we have been able to secure this good rating as well.”

The Youth Offending Team Board will now oversee an action plan that will be produced over the next couple of weeks to drive further improvements in the service.
