The Slough Youth Awards have gone ahead despite the Covid virus - celebrating the contributions young people have made to the town.

But it was a very different event from usual, as this year saw it digitally streamed for the first time - live on YouTube’s SloughForYouth channel with performances from local young people added to the mix.

The awards are supported by Slough Council’s Young People’s Service and Slough Youth Parliament.

This year the awards received 50 nominations for young people aged 11 to 19 (up to 25 with learning difficulties or disabilities and for care leavers) - all of whom live in the borough.

The ceremony was hosted by youth representatives Amelia Hussain and Nawid Bosty, who are both elected members of Slough Youth Parliament.

The whole virtual event was produced by Matthew Fleming & Patrick Harrison from Limelight Futures

Awards were presented across five categories: young artist, young environmentalist, young inspiration, young volunteer of the year, and young voluntary group of the year.

The winning Young Voluntary Group of the year was Slough's Young inspectors - made up of volunteers aged between 13 and 19 or 25 who inspect services that impact children, young people and their families in Slough.

Councillor Martin Carter, ouncil cabinet member for children and schools, said: “Our young people have shown during the pandemic how motivated they are in working to improve their community.

“They are an inspiration to us all and I’m so pleased we have this awards ceremony to recognise their efforts.”

The audience was treated to performances from BeatRoutes and poetry performances from Aditee Banerjee who also won the Young Environmentalist Award.
