MORE than 800 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Berkshire in the past 24 hours, the latest figures show.

A total of 884 positive Covid-19 cases have been reported by Public Health England in Berkshire in the past day.

These lab-confirmed cases are from areas including Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham, West Berkshire, Slough and Windsor and Maidenhead.

These figures are correct as of Friday, January 15, at 4pm.

The local breakdown for the past 24 hours as follows:

Bracknell - 78 cases, 5,308 total

Wokingham - 121 cases, 6,282 total

West Berkshire - 97 cases, 4,546 total

Slough - 257 cases, 10,821 total

Windsor and Maidenhead - 120 cases, 6,464 total

Reading - 211 cases, 7,763 cases

The latest seven-day rate per 100,000 people locally are as follows:

Bracknell - 620.2

Wokingham - 486.2

West Berkshire - 313

Slough - 1,086

Windsor and Maidenhead - 539.6

Reading - 756.6

There have been 3,316,019 cases of Covid-19 across the UK.

The total number of deaths - those with Covid-19 listed on their death certificate - across the UK has now reached 89,243.

In Berkshire there have been 26 deaths in the past 24 hours.

One of two coronavirus variants found in Brazil has been detected in the UK, according to a leading scientist and government advisor.

The mutations are thought to make the virus more infectious and Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is “very concerned” about the variant, adding that extra measures are being put in place to prevent the variant being imported to the UK.

On Thursday, Transport Secretary, Grant Schapps announced South America, Panama, Portugal and Cape Verde will be subject to a travel ban from 4am on Friday January 15 amid concerns over the new variant.
