However, in the first lockdown (starting on March 23 and ending in June), 341 people died.

The figures show that in just one month, 146 more people died from coronavirus.

In the chart below, there is a steady rise in the number of deaths recorded as Covid-19 continues to spread rapidly.

Third lockdown deaths recorded

The rise in deaths last month could be as a result of the Christmas period.

Office for National Statistics shows nearly a third (31.2%) of all deaths in England and Wales in the week ending 1 January involved Covid-19.

First lockdown deaths recorded

The figures do not define which hospital the deaths relate to, and only relate to those who have died in hospital and had tested positive for coronavirus.
