PLANS to build two apartment blocks at a demolished bed and breakfast site got the majority backing of councillors despite parking fears.

Developers got their application approved to build 34 flats at 19-25 Lansdowne Avenue, Slough, which was occupied by a hotel but has since been bulldozed.

The plans consist of 13 one-beds, 18-two beds, and three three-bedroom flats with 21 car parking spaces, 36 cycle parking spaces, and refuse and recycling storage.

Block one will be up to four storeys in height, and includes undercroft parking for six vehicles, and block two will be up to five storeys high.

Communal space and landscaping will separate the two buildings from one another, and the ground floor flats will enjoy private gardens.

But parking was a major concern for Independent councillor Haqeeq Dar (Lab: Wexham Lea), fearing the area will be “ram-packed” with cars.

For an application of this magnitude, the council requires developers to add 62 parking spaces. Only 21 are proposed, two of which are disabled bays.

On top of that, the developers originally secured planning permission for 24 flats – but have increased that by 10 – with 26 spaces.

Speaking at a planning committee on Wednesday, July 28, Cllr Dar said: “That area has problems and we’re just going to add on to it.

“They [the developers] have gone from 26 [parking spaces] to 21 while increasing by 10 flats. So, the developers are not even thinking about us or the residents around.

“I don’t know what to think about this one because it’s not even 50 per cent [car parking spaces].”

Despite the site being outside the town centre boundary, planning officers believe future occupiers can still walk or access public transport to get around hence why they agreed with those proposed spaces.

Six councillors on the planning committee voted for and two abstained.
