“EYESORE” extension plans to a residential home were given the go-ahead by councillors despite major concerns from neighbours.

Mr and Mrs Garlick of 211 Maidenhead Road had their plans to replace their veranda and gazebo by erecting a 4m deep single-storey rear extension approved by members on the Windsor and Ascot development management committee.

The application was called in by Clewer and Dedworth East councillor Carole Da Costa to be determined by the panel after 10 nearby residents objected to the scheme.

Speaking at the meeting on Wednesday, September 1, Annette Garlick said they need to extend their home for more space to take care of their granddaughter as well as “upcoming family needs”.

However, objectors feared the ‘overbearing’ extension will block sunlight into their gardens, overlook into their homes, and the designs are ‘not in keeping’ with the Victorian terraced scenery – with one resident calling it an “eyesore to all”.

Neighbour Eugenie Bonallack said: “My garden area does not constitute a structural part of my home, but it is where I entertain regularly and so I enjoy spending as much time as possible.

“It is like an extension of my home and therefore just as important as any other space to me.

“Any adverse effect on this space would be a loss of amenity which was recognised by Cllr Da Costa when she visited my property recently, and I really believe this is going to have an adverse effect on my mental health from the loss of daylight and sunlight.”

But Mrs Garlick said they have made changes to the design of the extension, such as reducing the roof’s eaves from 2.4 metres to 2.1 metres to reduce its overshadowing, in a bid to quash their neighbours’ concerns.

Planning officers believed the redesign will reduce the impact of loss of light to the neighbouring properties, with the scale not “appearing obstructive” to the street scene.

They also said there are no proposed side-facing windows on the extension to result in loss of privacy.

In total, 8 councillors voted for the plans, with one member Cllr Carole Da Costa abstaining.
