A FORMER Slough mayor and her husband have been ordered by the council to remove an “unacceptable” extension to their property.

Jit Singh Cheema has been told to remove the unauthorised additional single-storey extension of his property and cease the use of a ground floor side extension, which splits the single-family home into two dwellings to provide a self-contained residential accommodation.

Mr Cheema is the husband of councillor Avtar Kaur Cheema (Lab: Colnbrook with Poyle), who served as mayor from 2019 to 2020 and is currently vice-chair of the planning committee.

It is believed the enforcement notice is the reason why Cllr Cheema was a no-show at March’s planning meeting. Cllr Cheema is also up for election this year.

Planning officers believe the length of the extension at 40 Dawley Ride, Colnbrook, is “unacceptable” and the two dwellings split provides a “cramped form of development” that impacts the area’s character, a small level of garden space, and provides “inadequate” car parking that could “jeopardise” highway and pedestrian safety.

Cllr Cheema and her husband have been told to demolish the extension in its entirety, remove the kitchen and shower room from within the ground floor side extension, and cease the use of the residential accommodation.

The enforcement notice took effect on April 8, 2022, to which the Cheema’s have six months to comply. Mr Cheema has submitted a retrospective planning application to keep the extension.

A Slough Labour spokesperson said in a statement: "As far as we are aware, Cllr Cheema's partner is the freehold owner of this property.

“The enforcement notice relates to the change of use of a downstairs room and the partial construction of a conservatory extension at the rear of the property.

“Work to assemble this structure has ceased, and a planning application has been prepared seeking to regularise both the works and the change of use of the ground floor room.

“If the application is not successful, then the partially built frame will be removed and the use ceased - to comply with the notice by the October date set out in the council's correspondence to the property owner."
