SAFETY concerns have been raised about current roadworks and a temporary roundabout in Slough.

Roadworks are being carried out on Brands Hill and a temporary roundabout has been put in place at the junction of Sutton Lane.

The works were originally set to be completed by early April but there are no signs of it being finished yet.

Councillor Madhuri Bedi (Foxborough) said she has seen and been made aware of several accidents that have taken place here.

Cllr Bedi said: “It troubles me as not only am I a councillor who is raising concerns on behalf of residents, but I am also a resident of Slough who uses this route to get to and from home, day in and day out and I share the same concerns as residents.

“It surprises me to know that the council nor contractors have any record of all the accidents that have taken place since this new layout was installed, I would have thought they would have a way to gain this information.”

A council spokesperson said: “The health and safety of our contractors, work staff, and pedestrians is of the utmost importance and is a key priority.

“We've assessed the traffic management at Sutton Lane, Colnbrook over the last two weeks and from those observations we can’t see any traffic management issues. “The lighting, give way signs and presence of a traffic management officer on site meets the necessary safety requirements.”

Questioning the council, Cllr Bedi added: “You say the key priority is the health and safety of contractors, work staff, and pedestrians, which I take to mean cyclists too?

“What I don’t understand is where the key priority for drivers and the passengers travelling with them is?”

Cllr Bedi also suggested to the council that signage in all directions prior to reaching the roundabout would be beneficial to road users.

And she also queried the volume of traffic cones that have been placed on the road.

Many residents commented on her public Facebook page, with one who explained they have seen several near misses on the roundabout.

They said: “I always approach with caution especially when I’m turning right into Sutton Lane, would probably help if the signs notifying you of a roundabout ahead were further away from roundabout and in a visible position.

“As others have said there are too many cones blocking view of people indicating to turn right.”

Another one commented: "It is just a nightmare; I think people just have no clue as it is not laid out very well and people who are not familiar with the area would find it hard I would assume.”

Cllr Bedi is due to be meeting the council on site to discuss the concerns in more detail.
