MAIDENHEAD’S regeneration will “fail” if a lap dancing club is allowed to continue operating, objectors say.

The Honeypot Gentlemen’s Club on Queen Street, which has been operating for over 10 years, usually has its sexual entertainment venue (SEV) licence renewed every year but has recently seen objections to the premises.

Residents protested the club last year and triggered a licensing sub-committee hearing. The objectors believed the Honeypot will no longer fit in with Maidenhead’s new look once the town centre is regenerated in the years to come.

But the club’s representative said the venue has been there for 21 years and there has not been a change in the locality now that would make the Honeypot out of the place.

Councillors ultimately agreed to renew the Honeypot’s SEV license. But now the venue’s license is up for renewal again prompting two residents' lodging objections for similar reasons.

They believed the Honeypot’s presence would ‘not complement’ the new flats and shops from the Landing site as well as the new bars, restaurants, and businesses in the redeveloped Nicholson Shopping Centre.

One resident said: “Unsurprisingly and welcome, this is the area under reconstruction now.

“I strongly believe that the regeneration of Maidenhead will fail if this venue continues to exist. Its presence encourages other outlets of similar poor quality in the area.

“This then leads to undesirable groups of people there, fast food litter and stops many of those living Maidenhead venturing to that part of town.

“As a woman, I also feel vulnerable when near The Honeypot on my way home from the train station. It is an unnecessary venue in Maidenhead.”

Representatives from both sides will make their case at a licensing sub-committee on Monday, May 9. Councillors will then decide five working days after the hearing.
