A CARE home resident in Slough had a big smile on her face after she received a special chocolate birthday treat.

Doris Terry, a resident at Windmill Care Centre, on Bath Road, was gifted a keepsake box from Slough’s iconic Mars Wrigley UK to mark her 90th birthday.

The chocolate factory presented Doris with a large number of Mars bars on July 4, a few weeks after her birthday, which was on June 10.

And she’s not the only one celebrating 90 years this year, as the chocolate factory is also marking the significant milestone.

Doris’ daughters Carol Stephens and Elaine Mace, who both live in Bracknell, also attended the special presentation of the keepsake hamper.

When the Mars team handed over the gift to Doris she was beaming.

Inside in the box was a large card, which had all the Mars logos and a hand written postcard both wishing her a happy birthday.

We asked Doris how she felt to receive the gift and she said: "I do like chocolate, oh my goodness."

Originally from Yorkshire, the former secretary to businessman John Nike lived in Bracknell in the mid-twenties before meeting her husband Michael in Slough at the Tech College.

Back in Doris' day, locals used to say the town smelt like chocolate.

Carol said: “It’s a lovely thing for Mars to give to Doris for her birthday.

“She loves her chocolate, she's got a sweet tooth and I'm sure she'll share it all around with the other residents.

“She’s a great mum, she was always caring, very kind, and she liked to get dressed up and loved to have a boogie.”

She has now been at Windmill Care Centre for around two years.

Adam Grant, general manager, Mars Wrigley UK, said: “We are thrilled to celebrate our 90th anniversary with the people who have worked, rested and played alongside us over the past 90 years.

"It’s certainly a special occasion, which is why we’re excited to gift a few lucky 90 year olds across the UK some sweet treats and a limited edition anniversary card from Mars Wrigley UK.”
