SLOUGH Borough Council will move out of its current headquarters but won’t be moving back to its old base, the leader confirmed.

The cash-strapped local authority is working on a strategy to move out of Observatory House in Windsor Road to elsewhere within the borough.

The six-storey building was bought for £39m four years ago with the idea to move all of the council’s operations into one place as well as sub-let two-floors to other businesses to gain some rental income.

But with not a lot of companies showing interest in renting out that space and the council declaring bankruptcy last year, it has forced the local authority to go elsewhere.

Council leader James Swindlehurst (Lab: Cippenham Green) previously said they will “almost certainly” move out of Observatory House. He also said they will “not rule out” selling it off as part of the £600m asset sell-off.

However, at Monday’s cabinet, he confirmed they are working on a strategy to move out “at some point in the future”.

He said when the council leaves, it will utilise its current assets, such as The Curve, Chalvey community centres, and Langley library, to fit its staff in.

Speaking at the meeting on October 17, Cllr Swindlehurst said: “The whole point post-Covid is that people have more flexible working arrangements, and we believe our desk requirement is significantly less.”

He also confirmed the council will not move back to its old headquarters St Martins Place in Bath Road, which could be sold off as part of the mass £600m asset sales, as it will not meet “their needs” and will require “significant cash expenditure”.

A timetable for when the move will happen has not been confirmed yet.
