SPLITTING Langley in two between Slough and Windsor is the ‘best option’ under a proposed parliamentary boundary shake-up.

Following an extensive public consultation last year, the Boundary Commission for England has redrawn parts of its initial political map to reflect views from residents, councils, and MPs.

The parliamentary map is being revised to give each MP a roughly similar number of electorates. This will result in the number of constituencies in England increasing from 533 to 543.

The Boundary Commission proposed last year to transfer Foxborough and Langley Kedermister wards, which have about 9,000 electorates, from Slough to Windsor. Slough would retain Langley St Mary’s.

Slough Borough Council leader James Swindlehurst (Lab: Cippenham Green) previously said they were “sorry to see the integrity of Slough damaged” but reluctantly agreed with the Boundary Commission’s findings.

In the Boundary Commission’s report, which was published on November 8, it said it had received mostly opposition to this split but maintained the stance that losing Foxborough and Langley Kedermister is the “best option” as it would join adjacent Colnbrook with Poyle, which is already in the Windsor constituency.

The report reads: “We agree that the Slough constituency, while imperfect in respect of the split of the Langley community, is the best practicable solution compared to the alternatives.”

A third and final consultation on the new map of revised constituency proposals is open now until December 5. The public can view and comment on the new map at https://www.bcereviews.org.uk/.

The Commission will analyse the responses and form its final recommendations, which will be submitted to Parliament by July 1, 2023.
