BERKSHIRE MPs have claimed tens of thousands of pounds in expenses over the past 12 months, according to figures.

In an MP expenses list from October 2021 to September 2022, Berkshire MPs have claimed £180,296.31, which excludes staffing costs, in total, and have made 967 expense claims.

Parliamentarians can claim back money for travel, accommodation, work equipment, etc. but must publicly register their claims for transparency.

Topping the list is Bracknell MP James Sunderland, who claimed £44,632.80 for 197 items.

The Conservative MP claimed £22,491.60 on accommodation and claimed £3,898.67 in travel expenses.

The remaining figure was primarily office costs, such as £3,180 on website hosting and design, two laptops cost £1,788, over one thousand pounds was spent on two mobile phones, and over £350 was claimed on business and commons cards.

Following the Conservative MP is the Reading East representative Matt Rodda, who claimed £63,052.62 for 115 items.

He claimed nothing on accommodation but claimed £6,552.30 in travel expenses. His yearly £5,768 season ticket for the railway was included in his expenses.

Over £20,000 was spent on office management support from consultancies and parliamentary research services.

Labour parliamentarian and Slough’s MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi followed suit to claim £32,680.66 for a staggering 494 items.

This included £4,200 on parliamentary research services, over £6,500 on rent, £2,700 on professional and consultancy fees, and £840 to hire out venues.

His office also bought 15 bottles of milk for 85p each as well as picking up copies of the Slough Observer newspaper.

Reading West MP Alok Sharma claimed £22,119.25 for 107 items. His travel bill totalled £5,486.83 but claimed nothing for his accommodation expenses.

The Conservative MP’s office spent £5,400 on his office’s rent, £2,295 on hosting and design of Mr Sharma’s website, and £484.30 on a Great Western Railway ticket to Reading.

The remaining expenses claimed involved office supplies and stationary and paying off new phones or phone bills.

At the bottom of the Berkshire table is Wokingham MP Sir John Redwood (£8,230.22 for 23 items), followed by Maidenhead MP Theresa May (£5,067 for 27 items), and then Windsor’s long-serving MP Adam Afriyie is at the bottom, who claimed £4,512.91 for only four items.
