Shoppers have been taking to a high-street giant to buy their favourite items after concerns have mounted about its future.

On Thursday, August 10, Wilko announced that it had collapsed into administration.

In an open letter the chief executive of Wilko has said the retailer was left with “no choice” but to enter into administration after leaving “no stone unturned” in efforts to revive the business.

It means that Slough high street could wave goodbye to another shop if a deal is not struck.

Diana Humphreys, 43, from Slough, said she is "gutted" at the news and would definitely be sad to see Wilko close.

"I'm always in here. I get all my gardening stuff in here, whenever I'm decorating this is the first place I come," Diana said.

"It's so much more reasonably priced than the bigger DIY stores."

Diana had made the trip to the store to buy seeds and bird feed for next year, saying after hearing the news she wanted to come straight away.

"I don't know where I'd go [if Wilko closed]. Everywhere else is so much more expensive."

A Slough Wilko store worker said it is mostly "business as usual" at the moment, with shelves still appearing well stocked with the exception of some gardening supplies and makeup.

One shopper had popped in to buy her favourite eyeliner from the 'Essence' range only to find an empty shelf.

Margaret Ramsay, 88, from Slough, comes into the shop regularly for knitting wool and gardening supplies.

"I would be sad to see Wilko go. We're always coming in here. It's handy as the bus is right there," Margaret said.

"It's a shame, we don't have many more shops left like this.

"I hope someone can help. We've lost so many shops in Slough high street.

"I feel very sorry for the shop assistance, for the town itself - it's a crying shame."

Many shoppers had come in expecting a big sale, such as the 70 per cent off sale seen in the neighbouring High Wycombe store, however, no such sale was found in Slough.

Andrew Beevers, 45, from Windsor, added that the recent news is a "shame".

However, he said it wasn't a surprise.

"I can understand why it has happened as there is a decline in the high street generally, people buying things online - Amazon etc," Andrew added.

Wilko currently has signs up stating "100s of products reduced" and "big sale".
