A budget supermarket has pushed back the opening of its new Slough store for a second time.

Aldi, who are to open on the Farnham Road next to Pets At Home, has said that they will no longer be opening as expected in September.

It is the second pushback the supermarket has seen, with an original opening date being stated as Spring 2023.

However in April Aldi said that the store opening was to be delayed by five months, with September being given as the launch date.

During this time, what was once Pets at Home before the animal retailer moved units, has been demolished.

In its place, a larger structure has been built, with workmen seen adding the finishing touches to the exterior of the building. It is unknown if the interior of the supermarket is complete.

Meanwhile, residents have stated that rumours are flying around that Aldi "is not going to happen any time soon" while others fear the company may pull out of Slough altogether.

One Observer reader said there was "little sign of any imminent opening", and the "silence is deafening".

Concerns regarding the car park and backlog of traffic exiting close to the traffic lights on Farnham Road have also been considered by residents as reasons the Slough opening may be delayed.

Previously, Aldi has reassured residents that there will be enough parking, stating: “Once open the new Slough store will have 132 parking spaces available for our customers to use while shopping with us.

"We have worked closely with local councils to ensure that this number is sufficient to meet the demand of our customers and we look forward to welcoming them soon.”

Residents are still sceptical as to whether 132 spaces across Aldi, Pets at Home and Poundland will be sufficient.

Despite concerns that Aldi may still be months away, the supermarket is confident that it will open in October.

An Aldi Spokesperson said:  “Work on our new store is progressing well and we look forward to welcoming the community through our doors in October."

The opening of the new store is said to create up to 45 jobs for the community and enable local people to shop and save closer to home.

It will be the first Aldi to open in Slough, with the closest branch being in Windsor.
