A high street giant that crumbled in 2009 has teased that a return to the UK market has not been ruled out.

Known for its pick 'n' mix sweets and bargain prices, Woolworths held a prime spot inside the Queensmere Shopping Centre in its last years.

However, after a mostly successful run, the financial crisis saw Woolworths close its stores in 2009.

The German counterpart, known as Woolworth, was saved by HH Holding.

In a recent update on the brand, current HH Holding chief Roman Heini said he seeks to expand internationally and says the UK is on his "bucket list" of destinations.

Woolworth Germany told the BBC: "The brand name 'Woolworth' (without the 's') is owned by us throughout Europe. Should we ever plan to return to the UK, we would scrutinise the naming rights to minimise the risk of confusion. A transfer of rights could help if necessary."

Woolworth Germany said it was "unable to confirm any plans for Woolworth to return to the UK market" but that such a move was not ruled out in principle.

The former Woolworths Slough store is now home to Home Values, offering household goods, kitchenware, bedding and electronics.

Many residents are often nostalgic toward Woolworths, with hopes that it would one day return.

When asked what shops residents would like to see come to Slough in 2024, Jamie Alexander Rose said: "If Woolworths would be there and Blockbusters, HMV and Toys R Us."

Dozens of other comments mirrored his opinion, with Woolworths originally being situated on the High Street before moving into the now Primark unit in the Observatory Shopping Centre. It was later moved into the Queensmere Shopping Centre.

Reminiscing, Noshi Khan said: "The Pick N Mix was the best."

"The good ol days," added Marie Jefferson.

Christina Harrison added: "I still miss that wonderful shop."
