A 16-year-old from Slough has smashed a fundraising challenge which saw him hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sahdev Rana embarked on the climb during his half-term break, reaching the peak of the mountain on Friday, February 16.

In August 2023 Sahdev set his sights on the challenge, with a goal of raising funds for local charity Slough Outreach which cares for the homeless and vulnerable in the community.

With a goal of raising £1,000, Sahdev has exceeded the target by raising £1,330, via GoFundMe - which remains open for donations.

Previously Sahdev, who attends Burnham Grammar School, said: “I am climbing Kilimanjaro with my dad and am hoping to raise money for Slough Outreach.

“Slough Outreach are supporting many people and with the cost-of-living crisis their services are needed now more than ever before.”

Sahdev’s mother Savita Rana said he is a “compassionate” teenager who has done a lot for charity, including volunteering with Slough Outreach.

Speaking of the challenge, Savita said: “I am so proud of him. He said it was tough but obviously, a challenge like that would be. He feels super proud of himself.”

Sahdev flew back to the UK on Sunday morning and has started back at school with a big story to tell.

“His school is so proud of him too. It is just so amazing. It is a tough challenge for anyone but a 16-year-old all the more,” Savita added.

“His resilience and determination has paid off and he is a real role model for other teenagers and young people.”

Sahdev took on the challenge with seven others, with a group of family and friends aged between 16 and 52.

He said: “I am proud that I managed to achieve the challenge to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. It was tough but I’m glad I made it.”

Slough Outreach founder Shin Dhother said: "Sahdev is an inspiration to us all. He's a young man with a big heart and a desire to make a difference in the world.

“His decision to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Slough Outreach is a testament to his character and commitment to helping others.

"We at Slough Outreach are incredibly proud of Sahdev's accomplishment and his commitment to giving back to the community.

"His story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the positive impact young people can make."

Shin added that the money raised will "directly impact" the lives of many individuals and families struggling during these challenging times.
