A body found in a Maidenhead park has been identified as a man who was on trial for spying offences.

At around 5:15pm on Sunday, May 19, officers attended Grenfell Park, Maidenhead, following a report from a member of the public.

A man was found at the scene and emergency treatment was given, but sadly he was pronounced dead.

An investigation is ongoing into the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained and a police cordon is in place at the park.

Thames Valley Police have confirmed the identity of the man as Matthew Trickett, aged 37, from Maidenhead.

Mr Trickett was previously named as one of three men who stood charged with assisting Hong Kong intelligence service.

Chi Leung Wai, 38, of Staines-upon-Thames and Chung Biu Yuen, 63, of Hackney, were also charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service at the same hearing.

The trio appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 13 and were scheduled for further proceedings.

At the time of his death, Mr Trickett was on conditional court bail, which required him to register at a police station regularly.

Mr Trickett stood charged with information gathering, surveillance and acts of deception thought to be in regards to assisting a foreign intelligence service between December 2023 and May 2024.

It is also alleged that the trio forced entry into a UK residence on May 1.

Mr Trickett was due to appear back in Crown Court on May 24.

Mr Trickett's family have been informed and they are being supported by officers, who have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

A post-mortem will be conducted in due course.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "We are asking anyone with information to come forward, particularly anyone who was in Grenfell Park on Sunday afternoon prior to 5:15pm.

"If you have information then please call 101 quoting reference 43240233265."

As Thames Valley Police had prior contact with Mr Trickett, a mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as is normal in such circumstances where there has been a death following police contact.

The IOPC has assessed that referral and decided that the matter should be investigated by Thames Valley Police’s Professional Standards Department.
