Two people vying to be Slough’s next MP have both called out for change – after Conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak called a general election for July 4.

Slough’s MP Tan Dhesi said he’ll be ‘campaigning very strongly’ for a Labour government and to make sure that he keeps his seat.

But the Liberal Democrats’ challenger has also suggested that people in Slough might want a change from Labour. The Conservative Party was not immediately available for comment.

Mr Dhesi told the Observer: “After 14 long years of Tory failures from the crashing of the economy to the record high NHS waiting list, the crumbling schools and much else besides I think the good people of Slough and the wider British public are ready for change.

“I’ll be campaigning for very strongly to make sure that in Slough I’m re-elected and that we do our bit to get a Labour government.”

But the Liberal Democrat candidate Chelsea Whyte has said ‘there is everything to play for’ at the coming election – pointing out that Labour lost control of Slough Borough Council last year.

Speaking earlier this month she said: “This is an exciting time in politics, with everything to play for.

"The people of Slough made their opinion of the Labour Party clear during the recent council elections, paving the way for three hard-working Liberal Democrats to join the council.

“The Liberal Democrats present the voters of Slough with a clear alternative to the stale and untrustworthy politics of the past.”

Conservatives in Slough have not yet chosen a candidate were not available to comment when contacted by the Observer. Prime minister Rishi Sunak said the Labour Party had ‘no plan’ for government as he called the election in a speech on May 22.

He said: “There is no bold action. And as a result, the future can only be uncertain with them.”
