A thief has been handed a suspended sentence after using a key from a key safe to enter the home of a former client.

Stephanie Berry, aged 35, of Farnham Road in Slough, was found guilty of one count of burglary dwelling and theft – no violence – in a hearing at Reading Magistrates’ Court on 12 January 12.

It followed a Thames Valley Police investigation that has led to Berry being sentenced for her crimes.

On November 13, 2022, Berry entered the victim’s property in the Britwell area of Slough by using the key from the key safe.

Once inside, Berry stole £4 in cash from a drawer within the kitchen.

Berry was a former carer for the victim, a woman aged in her nineties, but was not employed in a care capacity at the time of the offence.

Appearing at Reading Crown Court for sentencing on Monday, May 20, Berry was sentenced to a total of a year and 14 days’ imprisonment suspended for 15 months.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Sikander Channa, based at Slough police station, said: “This was an opportunist offence whereby Berry targeted the home of an elderly lady whom she used to care for.

“The victim in this case was, thankfully, not at home at the time of the offender.

Berry used her prior knowledge of the property to access it and has completely abused her previous position as a carer.

“I am pleased that the victim has been able to have some closure on this incident in the knowledge that Berry has been brought to justice.”
