Manor Farm Propco Ltd has applied to Slough Borough Council for planning permission for the centre just south of the Hilton Hotel on Poyle Road.
The plans argue that the economic benefits of building the data centre amount to ‘very special circumstances’ that mean green belt development should be allowed.
Plans submitted to the council show that the northern part of the site is the Manor Park industrial estate, but the southern part is green fields.

Developers acknowledge that the site is on the green belt – but they argue that this is ‘poor quality’.
Plans say the surrounding area ‘is largely commercia’ and the site is opposite Poyle Trading Estate.
They also say that plans to build a data centre on the land eventually occupied by the Hilton were approved after an appeal to a government planning inspector in 2004.
It adds: “The poor-quality nature of the Green Belt on site and the surrounding area has been recognised in multiple appeal decisions”.
And it notes that the Labour government wants ‘a more relaxed approach to specific forms of development on Green Belt land, in particular where Green Belt falls within the definition of ‘grey belt’ ie it comprises previously developed land and any other land that make a limited contribution to the five Green Belt purposes’.
The plans are pending consideration at Slough Borough Council.
