Labour councillors have said their government’s backing for a third runway at Heathrow Airport is ‘fantastic news for Slough’.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced last week that the Labour government would support revived plans for the new runway at the airport just outside Slough.

Councillor Pavitar K Mann – leader of the Labour opposition group at Slough Borough Council – said she was ‘delighted to be in the room’ when the chancellor made the announcement. She said: “This is fantastic news for Slough.

“With a third runway and even more international connections, the town will benefit from more jobs and more opportunities for local businesses.”

She added: “We recognise the proposals will directly impact some Slough residents, but we firmly believe the overall benefit will be significant with ample opportunities for Slough residents.”

Councillor Mann also said she would push for ‘significant mitigation packages’ to benefit Slough residents and ‘ensure economic opportunities are realised locally’.

Slough Borough Council’s leader, Conservative Dexter Smith, last week described the announcement as ‘good news for Heathrow Airport’.

But he said residents of Colnbrook – closest in the borough to the airport – would have to be ‘compensated’, including with fewer flights using the northern runway.

He also said the runway should be coupled with a new Western rail link ‘with a seven minute journey time from central Slough to Terminal 5’.
