A family-run restaurant is set to close its doors for the final time next week after celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Gilby’s, located on Eton High Street, opened in 1975 offering a host of superb food using fresh ingredients and produce.

In a Facebook post on July 20, the business announced that they are ‘overwhelmed with emotion’ at their difficult decision to close down.

The restaurant said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce our doors will close for the very last time in just one week…

“As we enter these final days, we’re overwhelmed with emotion. The memories we’ve made together — with our incredible staff, loyal customers, and dear friends like you — will be treasured forever.

“This place has been more than just a restaurant; it’s been a home, a family, and a part of so many special moments.

“There’s still time for one last long lunch, a final dinner filled with laughter, or a meaningful toast to the end of an era. If we’ve ever shared a memory together, we’d be honoured to share just one more.”

Gilby’s opened in 1975 on Eton High Street in a unique setting designed by Lin Gilby.

The family made the decision to close after celebrating their 50th Golden Anniversary.

Their final day will be Sunday, July 27.

Lin added: “Following the loss of my brother Michael three years ago, I’ve carried on our shared dream, and I hope I’ve done him proud. But now, it’s time for me to retire and bring this chapter to a close.

“We’ve seen trends come and go, but our aim has always been the same: to create joyful experiences through great food, wine, atmosphere, and heartfelt hospitality. I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with such amazing teams over the years – they’ve been the heartbeat of Gilbey’s.

“Independent restaurants face mounting challenges post-Brexit and Covid, and we thank you for standing by us. Please continue to support your local independents – they need you now more than ever.

“We’d love to see you before we close, to share a few more memories. Thank you for the love, loyalty and laughter over the years.”
