Slough's Curve Venue has announced its Christmas show will be The Comet, based on the book of the same name by Joe Todd-Stanton.

The book has been adapted by StoryDen, with permission from the author.

The creative team includes the founder of Salt Hill VR, Jay Younes (VR and visuals), an award-winning Slough-based writer Desree (script), and Simone Carty (music), who was raised in Slough.

Research and development included workshops at local schools, where pupils explored the book and its themes.

The story follows Nyla, a little girl who has to leave her home in the countryside to start life again in the city.

All she can think about is everything she misses from before.

So when a comet comes crashing through the city streets and starts to glow and grow, Nyla can’t resist a chance to head somewhere that feels closer to what she had before, but what starts as an escape could be just the thing to make her finally feel at home.

It won the coveted Waterstones Children's Book Prize in 2018.

On its website, Waterstones described the book.

It said: "Once more using the magical and the inspiring to explore themes that are highly relevant to real children, Joe Todd-Stanton weaves a touching, compassionate story about moving home and finding your feet in new places."

The book retailer added: "From the award-winning Joe Todd-Stanton, comes an exquisite and heartfelt picture book touching on the bewildering experience of moving house.

"This beautiful story explores how this can affect a child's sense of belonging, but also how it can open them up to new and wonderful experiences."

The Comet show is directed by Fiona Creese of theatre company Slot Machine, with design by Amelia Pimlott.

The set is being crafted locally at Norden Farm in Maidenhead by its technical team.

The show features original music, songs, puppetry and projections.

It is set to be running from Tuesday, December 16, to Wednesday, December 24.

Tickets are £14, or £12 for 16s, and the age guidance for the show is for 5+ years.

Last year, the venue showed Little Red Riding Hood through December and featured a unique mix of puppetry, songs, and music.

The Curve is Slough's largest active performance studio, seating 220 people in its 180 tiered and 100 free-standing seats.

The building acts as a cultural space, also including a library, gallery and public exhibition space, and Slough Museum pods.
