A cycling challenge is returning this winter to encourage residents to stay active and enjoy the outdoors.

The Winter Wheelers challenge, organised by Love to Ride, runs from today (December 1), until the end of January and aims to motivate people to keep cycling through the colder months.

Participants have the chance to win prizes, including a £1,000 early-bird draw for those who register before the challenge begins.

Paul Kelly, lead member for planning, parking, highways and transport, said: "We know when the weather is colder it might not seem too appealing to go for a cycle ride, but overcoming that initial worry will have health benefits, as well as environmental and economic benefits, as there would be no fuel needed, just pedal power.

"The whole family can get involved, but always remember to keep safety in mind, wear helmets and make sure your bike has lights if you’re cycling in the dark."

The challenge also includes a workplace competition, encouraging friendly rivalry among colleagues and giving Cycle September participants a chance to beat their previous scores.

Participants can create an account and log rides manually or automatically through the Love to Ride website or app.

Points are earned for each ride and for encouraging others to join.

Weekly prize draws will take place throughout December and January.
