The filming for a Wicked movie has finally found a new home - and it's closer than you think.

The production, which is being directed by In the Heights director Jon M Chu, is still in its early stages.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the movie will start shooting around June 2022 despite it originally being due to start in March next year.

It will be the first film to be shot at Universal's recently built Sky Studios which is located in Elstree, Berkshire.

When will the new Wicked move be released?

While we don't have an exact release date, the announcement of a rough filming date means that we are one step closer to a Wicked movie adaption.

It at least allows us to speculate a little and we expect we'll see a possible release date for sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

As Jon M Chu takes the reigns as director, we'll see music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz who was the composer and lyricist for the Broadway musical.

The show that originally comes from Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was adapted into the musical by Winnie Holzman.

The Wicked movie cast

Currently, there are no confirmed cast members for the musical's adoption to the silver screen.

The film's director, who took over for Stephen Daldry, has reached out to fans asking them who should play the iconic roles of Elphaba and Glinda earlier this year.

The tweet definitely got fans talking with suggestions ranging from Ariana Grande to Dove Cameron with even some users throwing their hats into the ring.

Former leads in the Broadway musical also took to Twitter to have their say including both Kristen Chenoworth and Idina Menzel.

Kristen tweeted in 2019 that she thought she thought Ariana and Dove should take on the starring roles in a Wicked film.

Chenoworth said:""I'll keep saying it... @ArianaGrande + @DoveCameron, the @WICKED_Musical movie is your destiny!"

While Idina also agreed with Ariana as a choice for the movie following the pop star's interview about the role.
